Phil Hellmuth to Skip on the 2025 WSOP Main Event

Monday marked a major milestone for poker with the release of the highly anticipated 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) schedule.

Hours later, Phil Hellmuth, the all-time bracelet leader and 1989 World Champion, shocked the poker world by announcing on X (formerly Twitter) that he would skip this summer's WSOP Main Event. He cited the tournament's grueling length and its physical toll on older players as key factors in his decision.

Hellmuth explains why he's skipping the 2025 WSOP Main Event

Hellmuth said:
"It's just too tough. People always tell me, ‘Phil, you could play seven days in a row.' Yeah? Try it. Try getting up and playing from noon to midnight for seven days straight-It's exhausting."

At 60 years old, Hellmuth expressed doubts about his ability to endure the Main Event's demanding schedule. He described the tournament as an "endurance test," explaining that playing from noon to midnight for seven consecutive days is physically exhausting. Hellmuth noted that many top pros have suffered eliminations due to fatigue and believes the Main Event is no longer a true measure of skill. He advocates for adding days off, which he claims 80% of players would support.

Despite his decision, Hellmuth emphasized his deep love for the WSOP and its significance to him. However, after more than 30 years of competing, he feels unable to continue with the current structure.

Will the Poker Brat really Skip the WSOP Main Event?

While Hellmuth's announcement seems definitive, he has a history of reversing bold statements. He's never missed a Main Event in 37 years and may be tempted to compete if the tournament's energy or a push for schedule changes entices him back.

Hellmuth's recent struggles in the Main Event - he hasn't cashed since 2015 - raise the question of whether his concerns about endurance are based on personal experience or merely an explanation for his recent performances.

2024 WSOP Main Event champ agrees

Even 2024 WSOP Main Event winner Jonathan Tamayo agrees with Hellmuth, acknowledging the tournament's toll on mental and physical endurance.
"At some point, my mental acuity will diminish to a point where I will be overwhelmed, too."

Well ofcourse its hard to play for days on wsop main event in his age, especially if you come till end! Maybe its great move from him, to skip one year and to see how he will feel nex year and maybe he will play main event again!

Phil Hellmuth, the all-time bracelet leader and 1989 World Champion, shocked the poker world by announcing on X (formerly Twitter) that he would not be participating in this summer's WSOP Main Event, the only reason being that it's too exhausting, I'm not sure if that's the best answer.

He will play smaller events for sure, to try to get one more bracelet!

I don't understand sometimes, it happens that the player with the most bracelets in the world is not going to play the main event of the WSOp. That's incredible, I hope he changes his mind later, a high level player would not miss that.

You dont understand anything about news and poker! Read news and then comment, not just for points! He is older, he cant play like somebody with 20 or 30 years!

hahaha do you believe it is because of age, I have seen older players playing the most expensive games in the triton poker events, it is an excuse for that player not to go, he knows that it is one of the best tournaments in the world, but he does not feel like it, it is something else.

He is and old scholl player and probably reason's he give us are true. But like some one already say he will probably stil compete in smaller events traying ti chase another bracelets. As we all know how those bracelets and that is the player with most bracelets means to him.
Overall great player to be soo long in the scene is awsome achievement.

Sure i agree totaly. I see not in poker but in some life stuff, that now when i am not 20 anymore, are a more hard and you recover too more time when i was in my early years. And tournaments are not for all, specialy those result oriented when you can play good all tourney and then you geting 2 outers before final tabel.

every man needs a break in his poker life, and Phil Hellmuth proves that he is not so ambitious to win another bracelet, so, he is a true professional who guides his life as he wants, not according to poker.

Only he decides whether to play the main event or not, it's his money, but I think he shouldn't make excuses, if he really isn't going to play, then he shouldn't go and that's it, he's a good player and he should always maintain that until the end.

Its not about money, its about days that he need to spend on main event! He will play maybe smaller tournaments!
