Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions.
It's their second win in four years. Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.
The Kansas City Chiefs scored a late field goal (with just 8 seconds left) to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in this year's Super Bowl LVII, to claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
For quarterback Patrick Mahomes, this Super Bowl victory is the second in his career. As for coach Andy Reid, it's already his third Super Bowl win. They last won in 2020, when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV.
Another interesting thing about this year's Super Bowl is that Eagles center Jason Kelce and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce became the first brothers to face off in the biggest final game of the NFL season. Both have previously won the game, with Jason winning with the Eagles in 2018 and Travis with the Chiefs in 2020.
Opening Music
The night started with Sheryl Lee Ralph who sung the Black national anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" with the type of gusto exhibited during her Emmy acceptance speech last autumn.
Grammy-winning artist Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds also showed off his vocal prowess with a rendition of "America the Beautiful".
Country singer Chris Stapleton then sung a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" with Troy Kotsur, the Oscar-winning actor who starred in 2021 film CODA, performing American sign language alongside him.
First and Second Quarter
The Eagles were the first to score mere minutes into the first quarter, but the Chiefs responded shortly with a touchdown thrown by Mahomes to Travis Kelce.
The Kansas City Chiefs had a chance to take the first lead when Harrison Butker tried to make a 42-yard field goal, which saw the football hit the left upright. Jalen Hurts then connected with wide receiver A.J. Brown for a 45-yard touchdown catch to take a 14-7 lead.
The biggest highlight of the first half was when Hurts fumbled early in the second quarter, which gave the Chiefs a chance to recover and run it back for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14.
The Eagles gained the lead thanks to a rushing touchdown by Hurts put the score at 21-14, then further extended the lead with a 35-yard field goal right before the second quarter ended.
Just before halftime, Mahomes was seen limping back to the sidelines - he seemed to have aggravated an ongoing ankle injury he first felt during the AFC Divisional Round against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Apple Music Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show
The Super Bowl LVII halftime show on Sunday night was met with a mix of praise and excitement from fans. Rihanna's 13-minute performance featured classic songs across the singer's discography including "Where Have You Been", "Only Girl in the World", "We Found Love", "Work", "Blow it Up", "All of the Lights", "Run this Town", "Umbrella" and "Diamonds".
Some people have pointed out that the excellent stage design bears a striking resemblance to the fan-favorite Nintendo video game series, the Super Smash Bros.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the performance was the announcement of Rihanna's second pregnancy.
Third and Fourth Quarter
The Kansas City Chiefs, with Mahomes back on the field, scored shortly after the beginning of the third quarter, cutting their disadvantage to 21-24. The Eagles answered back with a field goal just minutes before the start of the fourth quarter.
The Chiefs took their first lead of the game with a touchdown in under two minutes during the fourth, then scored a second touchdown to bring the score to 35-27. The Eagles tied it at 35-35 with Hurts' third rushing touchdown of the game.
The Chiefs sealed their victory with a last-second field goal, ending the game with a score of 38-35.
And that concludes the 2023 Super Bowl LVII.
If you're already looking forward to next year's Super Bowl, then it will be held at the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada on February 11, 2024.
