This is the sport ive loved for my entire life, i played at a fairly good level as well, not as high as the level in the link below, i just wanted to get some thoughts on this game from international perspective, let me know what you think, im a member of a big AFL forum and the AFL (Aussie rules) and the NRL (Rugby league) are in a bit of a turf war at the moment so i want some feedback on both games, i wont post a rugby league link though, id hate to bore you all.

its the only ball sport where theres no off side rule, full contact and if your within 10mtrs of the ball (without actually holding the ball) you can get hit, it requires MASSIVE amounts of stamina, courage and skill, i can see why i stopped playing lol, its an awesome spectator sport though, some crowds (not including playoffs) are in exess of 100k, the grounds are about 200 mtrs long and are oval. you cant hit anyone above the shoulders or below the waist, no tripping, no holding a man who hasnt got the ball, you can bump him though if he's within 10mtrs of the ball (but its really open slather as the umps wont pay anything that isnt high or low), you must bounce the ball every 15mtrs you run with it and you cannot throw the ball, you must use a clenched fist and handball the ball to a team mate or kick it.
its not everyones cup of tea i suppose, its simply awesome watching it at the highest level live though, Utube doesnt do it justice.

In Portugal we love rugby too. I dont know exactly the diferences in terms of rules, but it looks you bet more on velocity, considering the size of the players. If you look to european players, you will find bigger and stronger athlets, and less skinny shaped and faster ones, so you wont see them jumping that high, although they also get tough ones against each others.
We actually get Aussie rules here in the UK occassionally on TV, I have watched a little bit here & there, but I never really understood any of the rules till i read your post Intentcity lol. I do play rugby though, & that i can tell you is a lot of fun, albeit a really aggressive full contact sport. I would give Aussie rules a shot though if I ever come down under!

I love rugby. It is my favourite sport by far but I have mates who are rugby players and into AFL and ice hockey. If you think rugby is rough you ain't seen nothin. Puts the flimsy cry-baby footballers to shame that's for sure.
Can't say I've watched much AFL although I have seen it on TV but I think I prefer rugby. Anything is better than football/soccer - which is one of the most boring sports in the world unless you're in a pub getting smashed.
