Its the percentage of income one can do, but i think it should not be. Instead, it should be the percentage of winning hand caculated (for example) every thousand or ten thousand hands. Its difficult to decide. A rich guy will play high stake to earn more in the less time possible. A poor guy plays low levels to grow his bank to start playing at higher levels. If the poor guy makes it, so he's a good player, perhaps a pro. If the rich keeps playing the same level without developing, so he is an amateur!

As i like to say : numbers never lies : so if someone have a good ROI on long run : numbers tells that the player can play and win big regularly... and they never lie XD
But i think the amount you win is important too : a poker player can't be pro if he can't live of this activity... pure logic!

someone who makes 10k monthly is definatly a pro imo, even if his job brings him 30k (some like their job or simply want a security). lets say i earn 1mil yearly by playin poker, but due to my mega bratwurst imperium i have an yearly incoming of 5mil...then im no poker pro i find too many compare it with media hyped durrr and whatsoever called pros.

T3ddyKGB, its IMO unfair to say your not a PRO becaus you outher income is greater than poker winnings. I also have a little problem with "semi-pro" it seams to me poker is the only game/job etc that you can be class as "semi", ever herd of a semi pro plumber, bulder, teacher or piolt (btw i do use the term semi to rep a player who does it part time) No one has mentiond ethical or technical standards yet, does it not play a part in being a pro? Some good answers, but i dont think % of income alone is good enough to class you as pro or not.

I think you need to check the word "professional" in a dictionary. Not said to be rude.
The reason you havent heard of semi pro plumber is that it's obvious when you are a plumber you're doing it for the money where poker is a hobby to most people and a way of living to very very few.

dictionary? not that significant...professional has by far more meanings now a days as whats written in the dictionary. if i was one of the best table tennis player in the world then according to you i wouldnt be a pro, just because its not my "job" / do not make enough money to make a living out of it.

Yes that is correct T3ddyKGB, you are not professional table tennis player if you are not doing it for the money. The term "professional" refers to the financials and not the level of competition.
wikipedia:
"In sports, a professional is someone who participates for money. The opposite is amateur, meaning a person who does not play for money, but in an academic (e.g. college football) or other private setting. The term "professional" is commonly used incorrectly when referring to sports, as the distinction simply refers to how the athlete is funded, and not necessarily competitions or achievements."
I think it's fairly easy to determine when you are a professional pokerplayer.
Find meaning of the term/word "professional" when the mentioned criteria are met you are pro. On the other hand the term semi-pro is wider used and not determined imo.

i certainly do not lol. professional has alot meanings man. pro = expert etc...
i quote u again: "In sports, a professional is someone who participates for money. The opposite is amateur"
i gotta be pro then..? answer.
edit: pro does not only mean if someone participate for money, or we all can call us professionals as soon as we participate for money in any kind of sport? ridiculous.

well you said i only have to participate for money to be professional...so theres no skills involved as in professionel, expert, specialist etc (because i missinterpret the word pro, but in fact thats what pro means ). you see, this leads no where lol.
in your vocabulary im a pro, if i wasnt participating for money then i do be amateur.
edit: i mean in your wikipedia it only says i have to participate for money...not that i have to make a living out of it. the definition of pro goes on

You can't make a living from playing poker without being skilled or specialist maybe that's what confuses you.
The quoted wikipedia was professional in sports. But you are right often wikipedia is written a bit sloppy I recommend you to check the word "professional" in a dictionary because the definition of professional is crystal clear.
