not confused at all. i simply try to tell you that there is no ownership on the word pro for "make a living out of it".
either im a pro (french) / expert (latin if i remmber) at something or not. the amount of money has nothing to do with it.

Ok, here we go..... Smile

For example Gus Hanssen makes this year $1,350,000 wow, he pro right?
In 2010 he is a losing player lets say -$785.000.
In 2011 he is also a losing player for -$1,245.00.

So?

He s not pro anymore? Tongue

(Just nagging...... )

@Teddy3KGB

Feel free to show me the point I missed in the definition of "professional". The definitions is written black on white and is crystal clear. You may have your own meaning of the term and are ofcourse fully allowed to make your own words and meanings of them im just clarifying for you what the word originally means.

because theres not a crystal clear definition that it means " makin a living out of it ". profesionell has more meanings.
its not my own meaning of the term, its jsut your picking on one "variation" of the meaning of pro....
just use the link you provided ? professionel = being expert at something it doesnt necessary mean that you (once agian) have to make "a living out of it"..
so if i have expert knowledge in poker then im a profesionalist.

google for another dictionary and i bet you´ll find 20 more meanings for the term pro.
actually we both right. its just your pikcing all the time on "makin a living out of it" and thats not true. thats why i had fun and kept posting but now im tired Smile

I said the the definition was crystal clear not that the definition was " makin a living out of it ". To avoid describing the definition of a widely used word I posted a link for you. Im not picking 1 variation, I posted a definition from a dictionary.

I will post the point you speak of :

"13. a person who is expert at his or her work"

and remember we are talking about when a pokerplayer can be classified as professional.

Sleep tight

Hope it has not keep you guys up all night.
The term PRO can be adopted in many ways, there are plenty of players that do not class themselfs as pro but yet do very well out of poker, there are also players who call themselfs PRO yet consistantly lose.
What about the tax man? does he get a say?

For now i can can say myself a pro poker player or not even semi pro poker player. Confused But someday i would like to get the title of pro poker player. Evil

Interesting thread...alot of pro players like Daniel Negranue, Tony G, Antonius had suffered severe losses back in the day when they were starting out. Even to the point of going bankrupt...they got back on their feet and look at them now.
To be a pro in any profession you need that kind of determination, and with experience will come results.

i think if you pull most if not all of your earnings from poker then you can class your self as semi-pro
Where as if you have earnt enough money from poker that you can retire and still play and win enough to keep you going then you can be classed as a pro.
Only if you have won an event at WSOP can you call your self you can be classed as very good, lets face it if you are lucky you could have a stab at any event, winning 2 plus braclets would stand you in good sted to call your self a pro. Big Smile

ive had a long poker session Smile

quote: "The term PRO can be adopted in many ways"

exactly. thats what i mean.

quote: "and remember we are talking about when a pokerplayer can be classified as professional"

why, is there a dictionary for pokerplayer?

poker still counts as gambling/game of hazard...not as sport (not yet). and when im expert/competitive at something (means: i continous make money) then i actually may call my self a pro ( a person who is expert at his or her work - NOTE: dont take the word "work" to serious or as a "job" Blink.....as bigfoot says the term pro can be adopted in many ways.

Why you should remember what the thread is about........nigga plz Aww crap! Not even going to answer that.

The only reason we ended up talking about the term "professional" as in sports was because you started to talk about table tennis.

Now your best arguement is that I shouldn't take the dictionary to serious Aww crap!

ROFL the discussion is over.

ok "nigga pls" you simply dont get it Big Smile

it fkin doesnt matter if its SPORT or NOT. you came up with your dictionary and sorry wikipedia ****. your right there is no NEED to continue arguing about it (except MR turbo has a POKER DICTIONARY) because PRO has many meanings. i can be pro because i make living out of something and i also can be pro if im expert at something.........so i can be pro at poker without to make a LIVING OUT OF IT. so hard to understand Confused Aww crap!
END OF STORY.

My understanding is that a professional does it for money rather than for the love of the game, though it is, I think, possible to love the game if one wants to.

In my job I consider myself to be a professional person but that seems to be a way to distinguish the middle class from the workers.

Its a bit of a false distinction, however, as I consider myself to be working class even though i am employed in, what is considered, by society, to be a middle class occupation.

If you want to call yourself a professional, why not, who cares, many other people do.Ii work with people who think of themselves as professionals, who i wouldn't piss on if they were on fire, to use a working class expression.
