As of next year there may not be any more rebuy events at the World Series of Poker according to WSOP Communications Director Seth Palansky. It is been said that organizers are considering getting rid of the rebuy events after getting complaints by some concerned players.
"There is a movement to not have any rebuy events," said Palansky. "There is the growing concern that a pro can buy a bracelet in a rebuy event."
Feedback from the players is an important factor when it comes to planning the schedule of the WSOP.
Palansky pointed out that no final decision has been taken in this matter but they are however strongly considering removing the events.
There are a number of players backing the suggestion to remove the rebuy tournaments from the WSOP and one of them is Daniel Negreanu.
"I am 100 percent against rebuy tournaments at the WSOP," said Negreanu. "They are fine for other venues, but not for a bracelet." Negreanu meant that rebuy tournaments are favouring the rich players who can make rebuy after rebuy and build up their stack in this way. The average player will not have much chance in an event like this since their bankroll is not big enough to do as many rebuys as it takes.
Another poker pro by the name of Layne Flack is of a different opinion, Flack won the 2008 PL Omaha rebuy event.
"That's bullsh--," said Flack. "It's not like there is no play. The field is huge."
Flack's main argument is that a player can only rebuy once his stack is equal or lower than his starting stack so there is no way to just buy your way to a big stack.
Only time will tell if the rebuy tournaments will be taken away from the WSOP or not.
