Not long ago, PokerStars announced that they will try to break the old record of the biggest online poker tournament. The old record was already held by themselves as they had 65,000 players in the same tournament last summer. Yesterday, it was time for a new world record attempt. To make sure that this tournament would be interesting to take part in, PokerStars guaranteed a prize pool of $300,000 where the top 30,000 players would get a piece of the cake.
So how did it go? Thanks to the low buy-in and the big guarantee this tournament offered not less than 149,196 players took part and a new world record was a fact as the old record had been beaten with almost 85,000 players. The winner of the tournament, Oskar69, received $50,000 in first place prize.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes before another world record attempt takes place and if Full Tilt or some other site will try to break PokerStars record.

Pokerstars spends tons on servers, its one of the things I like about them: its rarely slow. This promotion has cost them $150.000 to start with, but I am sure they earn it back in notime

Could someone explain the mismatch between the player numbers? It says no less than 149k people took part, but that the old record had been broken with 85K (and earlier it said the old record was 65K!). Am I missing something?

Easy: the old record was 65k indeed, now they had 85k more. 65 + 85 = 150 , close enough to 149.196 imo

Posted by shokaku: Full Tilt would not been able to handle such a large tourney with their current server infrastucture. So this record is safe untill Full Tilt ups its server farm |
think that never full tilt beat pokerstar if both poker sites grow so fast as is there at this time now now only pokerstar can do so big tourneys because they use the most progresing system and have the bigest servers
hope u understood that i want to say

30 thousand prizes? Wow! That is an interesting number to try and make part of this atempt. Ok, so there will be more than 70,000 players running for it, but almost half of it will win something, which is not bad at all...

Really nice achievment , PS* is the biggest Poker site for sure. It would be really hard for the other Poker Rooms to achieve something like that.

SuperNoob | 29/12/2009 06:35:36 GMT |
surely pokerstars is the biggest site in mtts, fulltilt didn't even give a shot to compete after failing miserably last time they tried to do so when pokerstars created their last record.

congratulations to pokerstars and to those who participated as they all set a world record together. I wasn't participating, maybe if FTP gives a shot at it I will be there.

leroi21 | 30/12/2009 01:58:45 GMT |
i dont think that ftp gonna try to break this record because their server cant andle a big tounament like 150k people
|
AA-Daelt-AA | 30/12/2009 20:51:54 GMT |
im not sure any other site is able to break that record, pokerstar has the most traffic and enough funds to guarantee that kind of prize and low buy in tournament. after all the highstakes actions putting highlights on full tilt, pokerstars had to bring attention back to them and they did it very well.

FenoMeno | 02/01/2010 21:22:01 GMT |
I hope Full Tilt will broke this record, because I like Full Tilt better than PokerStars
|
Sttopid | 03/01/2010 10:37:42 GMT |
right on brotha, go ftp, brake that record
|
Raggamann | 03/01/2010 23:24:27 GMT |
pokerstars just "bought" the record, look at the overlay, the record costs stars more than 150k$. thats just a stupid marketing gag, i hope they don't go on with that stuff.
