Is Phil Ivey broke?

Tags: black friday, divorce, full tilt poker, Luciaetta ivey, phil ivey.
Posted on 17 November 2011 by "T".

In the past few days, there has been a lot of talk and rumors regarding Phil Ivey and his ex-wife Luciaetta Ivey. The couple parted ways back in 2009 after some complications in court. Now, 2 years later, a new conflict has been brought to daylight. The newspaper Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that Luciaetta, through her lawyer, has handed in documents to Nevada Supreme Court where she claims that the Judge, Bill Gonzales (the man who handled their divorce case), was biased in their divorce since Phil Ivey gave Gonzales money to his personal campaign. In total, Phil Ivey should have donated $5-6k to Bill Gonzales in April 2010.

But that's not all. Luciaetta also claims that Phil hasn't paid out the allowance as he was supposed to do every month. According to Luciaetta, Phil paid every month from January 2010 but then everything came to a sudden end in April 2011 - the same month as Full Tilt Poker, where Phil Ivey is a part-owner, was closed down by FBI (Black Friday).

After Black Friday Phil Ivey announced that he would sue Tiltware on behalf of all the players who didn't get their money, and also he said that he wouldn't take part in the World Series of Poker. However, many believe that Phil Ivey did all this for his good and also many claimed that he's broke. Not long ago, Scott Matusow, brother of the well-known loudmouth Mike Matusow, said that Ivey might have lost all his money when Full Tilt Poker closed down.

"It seems like the rumor is true - Phil Ivey might be broke. If I feel sorry for him? Absolutely not. I feel sorry for his ex-wife, but she should have realized that she was getting married to a gambler," Scott Matusow said in an interview.

I don’t believe he is broke. Remember that, besides poker, he still has publicity contracts, I bet he can’t even remember from where comes some of the money that enters in his accounts. If he is broke, I am just dust…
 starbay17/11/2011 11:49:52 GMT
i also dont think hes broke, maybe he lost a lot of money in full tilt but you dont keep all your money in the one site when your top of your game
maybe he pretends to have nothing so he doesnt have to pay his ex wife LOL
 GIOMi617/11/2011 16:23:22 GMT
Maybe he is broke, but he will get on his feet again he will get some money backers without a problem to enter cash games or tourneys.

No way, he is the best cash poker player out there, i think he can rebuild his bankroll anytime Smile

I think we'll hear more from Phil after things will sort out with full tilt poker...
 BeMyATMplz17/11/2011 21:26:31 GMT
lol @ being broke..
If he was broke he'd instantly get staked by someone..he will always have his sources of where to get money from.
 fathandsslei17/11/2011 22:00:33 GMT
yep this guy will never know the meaning of broke unless he gets some serious ass kicking from variance lol, and like bemy... said he wud always find sum1 to stake him.
 LoGiX17/11/2011 23:04:03 GMT
No way he would be broke with only FT poker down. Ivey obviously plays on other poker sites along with real tournaments and cash games (eg high stakes poker, where he won quite a few bucks I believe...). The money in FT was surely a small fraction of all his money, no reasonable man would put all of his earnings in a poker account, that's just nonsense.

Phil is and probably will always be far from broke, for the reasons that have already been stated by my fellow BRM'rs. He may be having some liquidity issues, but he's likely as solvent as he needs to be. If he can't pay his alimony now then in 2-3 months he'll probably be back on track . . . just remember that his bankroll isn't the only thing he can't access on Full Tilt, as he also had shares in the company as a capital stockholder.

every few months we have a news that some big pro has gone broke, most of them are just speculation as no1 knows the real bankrolls of these pros.
and i think even if he was broke, wouldnt be hard for him to build again.

 initiator18/11/2011 19:29:31 GMT
Well 1 thing is for sure I read here a few months ago that he owed Full Tilt 6 Mil. at the time they got closed. Make of it what you like....
 Macubaas18/11/2011 20:19:31 GMT
I remember a story that was later confirmed by participants of Phil Ivey joining a high stakes cash game table on a vegas casino, the game was pot limit omaha.

Phil Ivey's buy in was 100k, he left the table that night with over 1 mil dollars, thats Phil Ivey Big Smile

Rumors say that he won big on the high stakes cash games from Macau, from what i heard wealthy local buisnessmans actually paid Phil money just to play with them, what he won was a bonus Big Smile

I also started to think that this broke thing is realted to his divorce.
 BadeaCR02/12/2011 07:42:16 GMT
Lol, even if he would become broke at some point (probably non poker related), he can easily get staked and build another fortune.
 kiirus202/12/2011 11:08:35 GMT
I wish he played more tournaments, so he can prove that he ise the best player out there.

Phil Ivey is broke? That would be insane! There is no way he could ever be broke, he is the best poker player in the world! He can just enter one tournament and he will be up $1m+ just like that. Tongue Scott Matusow sounds like a jerk too.
