Germany's Dietrich Fast won the record-breaking WSOP Europe event, €550 Oktoberfest tournament, in early hours of today. Fast received his first WSOP bracelet and €157,749 for coming out on top of a field of 2,144 entries after three days of no-limit Hold'em poker.
When the final table kicked off, two-time WSOP bracelet winner John Gale, Brazil's Rodrigo Caprioli and EPT and WPT champ Steve O'Dwyer were far ahead with 2.3m - 2.8m chips each over the other six finalists. Dietrich Fast started in 4th place with 732k and played his cards well to move up the ranks slowly, slowly.
After seven hours of play, he and John Gale were playing heads-up for the title. The battle went on for hours and tournament staff began talking about adding an extra day. After about four hours of play, Fast, who had been down to only 20 big blinds at one point of the HU battle, took down the final pot of the tournament...
In the 108th hand of the heads-up match, Fast opened for 420k and faced a shove from Gale. Fast quickly called with AJ, Gale turned over K6. The boards ran out 73JJQ and Gale won the pot with trip jacks. Gale received €97,804 for his runner-up finish.
