Last season:
Very much focus was on Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea and English football. Very much of his focus was on the lack of strikers in the squad. Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba together managed to score only 19 goals, which was very poor in comparison with Liverpool’s Suarez and Sturridge (53) and Man City’s Aguero and Dzeko (33). They finished the league in third place, four points behind winners Man City. In Champions League they lost to Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.
2014/15-season preview:
Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis. That’s the three Chelsea signings ahead of the new season. Costa are going to provide the goals lacking last year whereas Fabregas and Luis are supposed to fill the void left by departing Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole. The signing of Nemanja Matic in January can turn out to be very crucial to the team, just like Claude Makélélé once was in Mourinhos first Chelsea team.
Player profile:
Diego Costa: Naughty and ugly but a fantastic goal scorer. The opinion about the Spanish Brazilian depends on whom you ask. Scoring 36 goals last year for Atletico Madrid was enough to convince Jose Mourinho to pay 32 million pounds for his signature. With Luis Suarez gone, Costa can turn out to be the new player on the headlines. The question is whether it’s going to be for his behaviour or for his goals scored.
Summary:
Even if Jose Mourinho has said that Chelsea won’t do any more business this transfer window the squad is still a little bit thin to compete in all competitions. Another midfielder and a striker to cover for Costa after Lukaku’s department would be needed if Chelsea are going to last all the way this season.
