i think basicly its a skill game but the factor luck has definatly a voice. for me luck = stupidity except someone has outs/odds to call. so in my opinion its not the luck your fighting against but the stupidity...for instance the scenario in the quote. luck is clearly involved in poker imo.

Posted by IslandJack: If you see luck as a favourable statistical swing (which it is!), then luck definitely plays an important role in the game. I voted 50%.
If poker was 50% luck then half of the good poker players would still lose and half of the awful players would be winning. Poker is in fact very close to 100% skill. Yes there's an element of luck but I voted 0% luck cos it's much closer to that than 25%.

You need to learn about +/-ev. Of course you can't control the outcome of the cards but you're talking about a single hand. In poker a single hand is irrelevant. Skill in poker can only be demonstrated through several games. Luck is as Island Jack said only statistical swing, in which case it can be looked at with pure mathematics. Multiplied to infinity luck will balance out so you cannot blame luck in the long term. Certainly not 50% of the blame. If you make the right decision based on maths, using simple probability, it doesn't matter if your card doesn't hit. Given a number of games making the right decision will prove to be positive financially.
I hope that I won't get rated down for this as doomdy was since it is after all my opinion and you shouldn't go silencing people just because you don't share that opinion. But I believe that poker has more proportional skill than football and lots of other games. Most things in life involve a bit of luck but you can't really make a career from luck alone. In football championships for example, the luck of the draw could be hugely influential as well as injuries, referee's decisions, weather conditions, personal problems, coin toss, momentum and the goal keeper jumping the wrong way. The best team doesn't always win.

I say it again, Poker is 75% skills and 25% luck. Example 1: I had AA and went all-in and lost to a two pair. That is bad luck. Example 2: I had pair 66 and want on tilt, my opponent had QQ, but on the river I got a 6. That is called very good luck.

Now run these hands 10 million times Then there is 0% luck involved
