High Stakes poker: Famous pokerstar keeps on losing money

Tags: Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negrean, Doyle Brunson, high stakes, high stakes poker, Peter Eastgate, pokerstars.
Posted on 02 April 2009 by "T".

Daniel Negreanu keeps on losing big money in the popular TV show High Stakes Poker. In the last episode of high stakes poker he lost everything he had on the table so he had to re-buy for another $200,000 to stay in the high stakes game with blinds of $400/$800.

Daniel Negreanu can't get anything going at the moment. He's waiting and waiting for playable hands, and when he finally gets them, usually the board isn't so kind to him. One example of this is when Daniel had 10-9 (clubs) and called a quite big raise from Eli Elezra who had pocket aces. The flop came Q-2-4, two of them clubs which game Daniel the flush draw. Elezra was first to act and he betted $17,300, Daniel re-raised to $44,100 straight away. After that Elezra decided to re-raise Daniel to $119,100 and Daniel decided to put in his remaining $226,300, which Elezra called after a moment of thinking. When both of them flipped over their cards Elezra was 67% favorite to win the hand against Daniels 33%. Unfortunately for Daniel Negreanu neither the turn nor the river card helped him and Elezra took home the monster pot of $487,700. After that Daniel had no more money and had to go and get more so he could buy-in again for another $200,000, just to stay in the game.

About HighStakes Poker season 5
The fifth season of the popular TV show High Stakes Poker is running at the moment on the cable TV network ‘Game Show Network' and millions of people all over the world follows each episode on TV and internet. The biggest names in poker such as Daniel Negreanu, Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Barry Greenstein, Doyle Brunson, Peter Eastgate and many more takes part in season five of High Stakes Poker. High stakes poker is played live in Las Vegas with commentators and every episode usually has a new player to keep the game interesting. Even though many of the players know each other very well and seem to have a really good time while they are playing, it's only about making money and not about being nice to your friends.

Biggest pot
The biggest pot won so far during season five is when Barry Greenstein got all his money in with pocket aces against Tom "Durrrr" Dwan's 2 pairs. The pot was over $500,000!

I didn't know a pro could tilt like that!

Just to comment, the hand with the biggest pot was not won by durr, it was won by barry greenstein with 2 pairs Jacks and nines..

And Daniel is a great player, just not having a good time!

He did final table of WSOPE main even two years ago!

Negreanu is one of the best players in the world (Top 5 in my opinion). He is just having a downswing... blah..

For 5 years?

Big Smile

Daniel is no doubt a really good player especially in tours but he is far from top 5 imo.

Are you not bright enough to seperate personality and poker skills ?

Are you not bright enough to seperate someone else's opinion from yours? I don't like him, full stop. I said I do not care what he has won, meaning I don't care how good he may be. "Don't care" does not mean I don't recognise it. Seems you're the dim one

Well, Negreanu has losing streaks, like every poker player.

PS: I like his style AND his personality.
You don't have to be an jerk to be a great player...

You are right I was too fast there, sorry. I personally don't like Durrr but think he's an amazing pokerplayer and many people don't give him credit for his game because he is kind of arrogant.

Edit: to answer your question....yes I think I am, can't see how I mixed our opinions?

When I lose on tilt, I lost ... 25$ ... so not like every player xD a tilt for them is minimum a years of work for us xD
 Flangel06/04/2009 13:00:45 GMT
Why would U think he sticks his chips in on a draw?

If U see the history of his HSP show, then history matters. It's not about one hand, or two hands but the entire show.
Same goes now Barry VS Durrr the are building a history with eachother and they play differently when facing eachother in HU.

Same goes for Daniel, he kept missing draws, Quads over Full, flopping nuts against runner ,Quads etc etc.

When he moved in with his 9-10 Suited agaist Eli's Aces, it was meant to make
A. A stand
B. His Personal HSP history
C. maybe getting Eli off the hand
D. A flush draw

Unlucky? Confused

If the money had went in on the flop, yes then it would have been unlucky. But so it was just donkplay. What should Ziigy have? Complete air? A worse queen? Come on.

Daniel N has got totally pwned this series and Durrrr has run the show. Like them or not that's the way it's been.

I've never really liked Durrrrs attitude or manor before but his play is unbelievable and his demeanor at the table is totally professional. The most exciting player out there at the moment.

Check out Daniel's cocky attitude on episode 1 series 1 and compare it to the last episode of HSP. The state of the game has changed so much and he needs to adapt and fast - where's all his reading skills gone? Why can't he 3-bet and mix it up like Durrrr does? He's well behind the times and he knows it - the online high stakes players are all so much better than him - certainly at NLHE cash games.

The people on here ( and other sites ) that slag of Durrrr need to get there heads checked. They would all get crushed should they ever meat him at the tables and he is giving us an exhibition in poker the likes of which I've never seen before. He deserves much more respect from the general public than he gets. The pros all respect him and his game whys it so hard for everyone else too?

More correct. He is good in reading other players hands, figuring out he is behind, but calling anyway. Cool

I think you could criticize him when you will be able to do that :

Webs - do you think Daniel is the only pro out there that can read that good - cause I don't. He's the only one that will verbalize it but others can read just as good. They just choose to keep it to themselves.

While Daniel calling your hand can be intimidating I think him telling his opponents is in itself a mistake.

If you have a good read on a player why alert him to the fact so he can start changing his betting lines and mixing it up. Far better to keep it to yourself and keep your read solid and why do you want to share this info with the rest of the table?

It's great for the telly and has helped his popularity no end but it's time he stopped this little party piece of his if he wants to win more poker games. You would think he knows better than I but I believe there is a good reason why so very few of the top pros do it.

 Webs36707/04/2009 09:18:20 GMT
Hm yea you are probably right. But maybe he just wanted to throw them off balance.

But I don't like the fact that most people here say that he's a donk, a 'kid' who should stop playing poker. I would like to see them in front of him, it's easy to criticize him while he's playing with some of the best players of the world.

How can you not like him ? He is one of the friendliest pro, and even if NL High Stakes is not his strongest game, don't forget that he won 4 WSOP bracelets, finished in the WSOP money 34 times, finished 11th at the 2001 main event, final table at the WSOPE main event last year, won 2 EPT titles, 8 EPT final tables, and finished in the EPT money 18 times.
So don't worry about his money Worship
 MikkyMo7307/04/2009 10:18:20 GMT
Daniel is a great player, or at least he was. These days he seems to take the game lightly and if you're going to do that you should be doing it with small amounts of cash, not $200,000

I do like him, he's one of my fav players to watch and he's certainly no donk, but he ain't the daddy any more. A few years ago he was and it was soooo sad to see him getting pwned this current series. In previous series he has just been coolered in a few monster hands but he's played as well as anyone - not this time though.

I really hope he makes the necessary adjustments to his game and comes back to the top. He can start by learning to 3-bet.

The game has changed so much but the other "old boys" at the table, Elly, Greenstein, and Doyle, all adapted well and were able to hold there own with Durrrr and his antics but not so for Daniel.

Daniel is coming back for part two though so lets hope he can fair better in this second session. If he plays the same Patric Antonius is gonna break him. Be warned in advance about this dangerous Fin.
 Mordo08/04/2009 00:15:59 GMT
I used to loose lot of money playing this way. Playing whit emotional wish to recover quickly or raise quickly the amount.

but I play only freerolls. Smile
 fcumred08/04/2009 01:08:10 GMT
whatever you say about negreanu he is one hell of a player.

Also he does more for the game behind the scenes than most people realise. He is always involved in promoting the game, improving rules, legislation and things like that.

He may be slightly irritating but hes Mr Poker personified.

Yes he has lost a lot of money, and I agree I don't care too much for his game this season around, but earlier seasons he has played great easily one of the best ones around the table those times, don't really know what has happened to his game now, but loosing 5 years in a row on HSP isn't the same as a 5 year downswing, if you compare it to online poker it isn't much more than a week or two of multi tabeling down swing.
