Poker Players Drink More Alcohol Than Other Gamblers

Tags: alcohol.
Posted on 28 October 2014 by "T".

A total of 2,131 active gamblers in the UK were asked questions about their lifestyle, physical fitness and gambling game preferences in a recent study carried out by a British poker news site.

The results showed that poker players in general are more health conscious than other gamblers, but it also revealed that they drink more alcohol. Mirror.co.uk reported that four things in particular stood out when it came to poker players.

1. Poker players were tied for the second-lowest BMI (Body Mass Index) alongside Baccarat. The BMI rating was 25, below the UK average of 27.

2. 23 per cent of poker players polled admitted to drinking more than the recommended weekly limits for alcohol consumption.

3. Male poker players were the most likely to exceed the recommended weekly limits for alcohol consumption.

4. Poker players were the most physically active of the group with 58% of those polled undertaking more physical exercise than the weekly recommended levels.

I am not surprised that poker players drink more alcohol than other gamblers because whenever you are in a game, it is in a social environment, i.e.pubs, casinos, where the alcohol is freely available

I think there is more time in poker to drink.

In games like roulette etc there is little time to drink and at slots its a lot more intense.

Poker can appear more relaxed, time between hands etc to allow for more drinking.

I find I drink more playing live as there is more time, and less online cause with 8 tables or something open its faster and I forget to drink. I would be interested in a survey comparing poker players drinking live compared to online.

So the no.1 rule is not 2 play when u have been drinking,we always associate casino with drinks and enormous winnings but it's a discipline and u gotta do a lot of math so...no more alcohol !!!

I know some players drink alcohol to get confidence and courage in poker play. Usually they are losing money when playing drunk.

Because true degenerate gamblers have no money for alcohol!

When I used to be a full-on, degen gambler - I'd walk into a casino with say $1,000 and imagine a cruisy sorta night; just pacing myself with the gambling, taking a break here and there - get some food, enjoy a scotch and a smoke out on the smoking balcony, etc..

But then.. reality (I lose it all in about 30min, with increasing bet-sizes as I chase my loss and rapidly can't fathom sparing even $5 for a drink, that $5 could be used to win back the $800 I'm already down after 20min!)

Poker players.. nah, you can take your time, one hand every few minutes, skills keeping the bankroll healthy, hey - nice lady walks by and offers you a drink, sure, why not - bring it to the table, thanks hun!

Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised if this did have *something* to do with it.

Honestly, as a degen-gambler I'd rarely split for a drink, but when I go out and play poker- I drink as much as I want to (which is quite a bit!)

Russians drink vodka by shots and not as a slow drink. So, vodka doesn't go well with poker at all.
My last poker session (on Friday) was accompanied just by two drinks of Bowmore single malt on the rocks.

I would have liked to have seen some more detail of this study as 2000 people is quite a small sample size and I have found that most gamblers will gamble on more than one game.Comparing poker players to baccarat players in a study this small seems odd.
Also it would be interesting to see if these were pro players or recreational.Anyone have a link to the study?

G'day mates
When I was younger I used to drink too much.
I have not drank any alcohol to speak of in a few years now.
Every once in awhile I get a graving for Glenmorangie single malt 18yr old scotch.
That craving always goes away after 15-30 minutes though.
Wishing you all the best
be cool

The biggest problem is my inability to refrain myself from playing (or consuming alcohol or whatever) when it is quite obvious to the spectators (if there is any) that I should quit.
I guess it is acceptable as long as you are playing (or whatever) with your own money.
Have fun! Life is too short.

Yeah all the gambler i know drinks or have some vice of some sort so it begs to differ why poker is still looked as a gambling game because of all the bad image that surrounds it , like drinking , stealing and so on, cheating too if i remember correctly! Or it might just be the casino who encourages people to drink and so on with all their freebies going around when you sat at the tables and so on, but dont drink as it will affect the way you think and can lose money!

Thanks yout Smile Did you read it?
Quite interesting reading and definitely much more info than I thought.
I think another, and maybe the biggest concern here is that if you are a regular slot player then I suggest you take a few days off, save some money and get some life insurance policies on the go.
 yout8528/10/2014 21:04:40 GMT
No worries Smile - Yeah I did read it, certainly was an interesting read.

Thank God I don't play slots Cool

More players should drink while playing poker! Especially if it helps them to make very brave decisions and causes them to lose a lot of money as a result of their bravery. It should be to each their own and I'd people want to drink, then that's ok.
 pinotte28/10/2014 21:51:14 GMT
I played live in a poker league for about two years i would have a beer before the game and one at breake time but never had one during the game.

The very next hand after my AA got cracked by Player9's J5o. I was on horrible losing streak, so pissed and a bit drunk.
Even after this miraculous win I kept chasing loss and eventually got bust. I should have stopped playing there!!! So stupid!!!

UK poker players also tend to drink more than the weekly suggested amount. 23% of the 315 poker players who were surveyed admitted that they drink more than the recommended weekly consumption of alcohol. The only groups of gamblers to drink more than poker players were slots fans, 24% of which consume higher levels on a weekly basis. Big Smile
