During a Texas Hold 'em tournament at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Southbridge on the night of March 16, 2012, a Massachusetts man "sucker punched" a 45-year-old man, who he believed had insulted his girlfriend, in the face so he fell to the floor. The victim, Daniel McDonald, suffered brain and skill injures when his head hit the concrete floor, and he died in the hospital 8 days later.
On Wednesday, James A.Walsh, 41, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in court. Telegram.com wrote the following about Wednesday's court proceedings: "Mr. Walsh occasionally wiped his eyes with a tissue as Mr. Reidy [the Assistant District Attorney] read impact statements written by Mr. McDonald's family and former co-workers at Hyde Tool in Southbridge, where he had been employed for the last 25 years. His son, Devin McDonald, said in his statement that he lost not only a father, but also a "best friend and confidant" when Mr. McDonald succumbed to his injuries."
James A.Walsh will be sentencted next month. He could face up to 20 years behind bars in state prison.
