It seems like the interest in playing poker events with big buy-ins in Australia isn't what it used to be. The 2017 Aussie Millions, conluding today, only saw 18 registrations for the A$100,000 Challenge which ultimately led to that the A$250,000 Challenge was cancelled.
Tournament staff at Crown Casino decided to add a A$50,000 buy-in no limit hold'em event to replace the A$250,000 challenge, but the event only attracted six players. Crown Casino claimed that the lack of recreational players were to blame for the low interest in playing the big events. In addition to few recreational players, many of the poker world's biggest names didn't show up, including three-time A$250,000 Challenge winner Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and Jason Mercier.
