The 2020 Irish Poker Masters on partypoker has concluded on December 15, and here's one particular player we'd like to feature on - she's a budding poker player who won first place at a certain IPM event!

December 13 was a special day for- her hard work paid off at the partypoker tables when she became the last player standing in the IPM #14 The JP Masters PKO event for €52,902!

Mary is a resident of Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada with her husband and a teenager. They also have two adult children who live in Edmonton. Mary is a full-time psychologist by day, but by night she is actually a budding poker player at partypoker.

From Play Money to IPM Glory

While growing up, Mary (pictured below) has played various card games with her family and poker was her favorite.

"When my kids were little, my husband and I would have a date night by playing poker online, side-by-side in different games but still together. It was a cheap date with no childcare costs. We started with play money and then began playing micro-stakes tournaments."

"I grew up in a card-playing home and loved playing Texas Hold'em immediately. I loved the challenge and tried to learn everything I could so I could get better. My husband still plays poker, but not as much as me. He will often play other games, like World of Tanks, while I play poker. Most of the time, I play $11 to $55 buy-in and I satellite into the higher buy-ins."

Mary and her husband share their success at the tables, with Mary giving him $100 every time she cashes for at least $1,000 in a single tournament.

"When I cash for over $1,000 in a single game, my husband gets $100 of my winnings to spend on tanks or rewards in his game...but only $100 no matter the win or that would be a lot of tanks!"

Quest to Become the JP Masters Champion

It was Day 1B when Mary entered the €530 buy-in JP Masters event. Around 207 players bought in on that day, with 31 moving on to Day 2. Mary finished her flight with 528,071 chips, good enough for 16th place, right in the middle of the pack.

All those in Day 2 were in the money and guaranteed €554 for their efforts. Mary had already accumulated €937 in bounty payments so was already recording a nice cash and her husband was guaranteed more tanks!

"I remember saying to my husband that I thought I was in the cash but we wouldn't know until tomorrow because there was still another flight to play. In the end, I think we had €554 locked up at that point. Being already in the money was definitely nice, it meant I could play without having to at least make a min-cash (which would be helpful to my bankroll). I didn't really do anything to prepare. Sunday is usually a day of ‘potential' and ‘hope' for me as I play satellites during the week to get into some of the bigger weekend games. This started like many other Sunday, it just ended a whole lot better!"

Pocket Kings Saves the Day

It was all worth it for Mary even if the road to the top did take a lot of grinding. The deck at first was not being kind to Mary and for long periods she was trying to hold on to her short stack, believing at any moment she will bust out before reaching the final table. She did make it to the final table, but was still in the short stack until pocket kings saved the day.

"I eventually managed to inch my way up a bit and then when we were down to seven players, a shorter stack than me opened, I called with pocket kings, and another short stack shoved before the original opener shoved. I had them both covered...I called of course and my kings were against ace-queen and ace-king. I held my breath and was calling out ‘Hold, Hold," and the cards came Q-T-T-8-3 and I knocked out two people, collected their bounties and jumped to second in chips."

"The bounties were so big, I love bounty games but this was above anything I ever experienced. After I came down from that, the thought occurred to me that I had a shot at shipping this thing, but I can't say I was confident I would win."

Mary at the Heads-up Battle

Pavlo Kolinkovsky busted in fifth before UK-based Frenchman Patrice Brandt in fourth-place. Rui Ferreira settled in third-place, leaving Mary and Aleksandr Zhilin heads-up for the title and the lion's share of the bounty prize pool.

"When we went into heads up, he had a huge lead because he knocked out the third-place person and I had lost a lot of blinds trying to knock him out. Still though, I think I had 40 big blinds to his 100. I wasn't confident I would win but I knew I have the potential to win...I knew I COULD win."

Mary managed to claw her way up until the stacks were eventually level. She offered her opponent an even chop of the bounties, but he declined and the two continued their one-on-one battle, which soon went Mary's way.

"How did it feel when I won? It is beyond words! My heart was racing so fast and I yelled out ‘I did it'. My husband had his headphones on and didn't hear me so I texted him a picture of the final screen and he came running."

"We were both so excited. I gave him a big hug and said, ‘I finally managed to realise that equity I keep saying I have every weekend.' I was excited, I felt proud and validated. I've been working hard on my game and it is paying off. I know I have so much more to learn, but days like this make it super easy to keep going."

Mary wins MILLIONS Online Seat and PP LIVE Passport

A total of €52,902 landed into Mary's partypoker account. Take off €100 of that for the deal Mary has with her husband, but where is the rest going?

"It may sound boring but almost all of it is going to bills. That will provide me with incredible relief and pleasure. I will keep some of it in my bankroll and treat myself to a few bigger buy-ins to take shots but then I will return to my regular limits. Christmas will be a little more special for our kids and we will pull out a bit of the money to share with extended family as well. This has been a tough year for a lot of our family and it will feel good to be able to bless others."

Mary is hopeful of continued success in 2021. She has already secured a $5,300 seat in the MILLIONS Online event and has a PP LIVE Passport waiting in the wings.

"Mostly, I just want to keep learning and enjoying the game and occasionally ship a big enough prize to pay bills and help others."

You will definitely see more of Mary at the partypoker tables as it is her primary site for grinding.

"I love the changes that partypoker has made. Their software has improved a lot and their games are well-structured and run at decent times. The Daily Legends games offer good prizes in my buy-in range and I LOVE the satellites they run into the bigger games. I wish evening games like the $109 and $215 Bounty Hunters had satellites into them!"

Work hard, jump into some satellites and anything can happen. Mary is living proof anyone can win big at partypoker, perhaps it will be your turn next?

Congratulations to this player and her partner, in addition to the fact that she works during the day, she takes time to play poker, I think she is passionate about the game because everyone does not do it, because there are several reasons, one of them is that you arrive tired and It is not the same, your mind is overloaded with the day, but she is an example to follow, and perseverance asked for more and won the great prize, good luck and continue winning and enjoying.

 CALICUL23/12/2020 01:40:13 GMT
This woman proves her qualities and in order to become a top player she must to insist more on games of poker. Her talent can earn more money and we will see this in the future (that if it stays in front of public opinion with some results). Geseco, maybe dule-vu is frustrated that this lady doctor took 1st place there? Big Smile

Winning 52 thousand dollars is a lot of money, very good, congratulations to the poker player and her husband, who despite having work all day takes time to play poker which is a mentally sacrificed juice, and they have broken this barrier and look at what he got, a great reward for his effort, a great example of perseverance and discipline.
 CALICUL24/12/2020 01:32:43 GMT
There is a lot of money of course, but you can't compare it with other big tournaments where the prizes for 1st place are millions of dollars. You saw what strong tournaments were. This amount can help her insist on more.

Poker is an exciting game and I think everyone likes this game, and I think there are no age limits or professional, anyone with perseverance of improvement can achieve great results, that is an example to follow, that things do not They happen by themselves, there is hard work and a lot of sacrifice, and I think this doctor knows it and has achieved it, congratulations for them and their family, I think it is gratifying to know that you are a winning player, and it has shown.

It's great to perform in poker as a doctor and this woman deserves congratulations. I think she will insist on playing a lot of poker games to have more good results. Depending on her time she will play for qualifications at wsop.
 geseco1227/12/2020 21:40:11 GMT
It is great that this woman, who despite the fact that the time she had was limited, did not give up, and continued, I think the reward is that, we must be consistent with what we do, and the most beautiful thing about poker is that it helps you to organize yourself, improve as a person, stabilize yourself, I think these are very important points for you to be the best. example of the doctor and congratulations, that the successes continue, I believe that it will be the only award that he receives.

Pocket Kings saved the day , that's interesting to me , no Ace on the river or whatever lol , not safe even with Kings nowadays , lol . So she gives $100 to her husband for his games or whatever , for every $1000 or more win she has , now it's $52K , how much will she give to him ?? World of tanks game sucks , better not give him anything to spend there , lol , maybe save them , win a lot more , then buy him a real tank , nope , too much expensive , maybe a replica , or a remote control tank , special order and delivery , lol Cool
 CALICUL28/12/2020 19:31:59 GMT
Yes. I read this news and it's nice because i had some games when i was left with 15 or 30 chips (1500 at the beginning of the game), and i finally won at the tables with 9 players. This is great luck, but it happens sometimes. This woman had more stack but KK was very good.
 geseco1202/01/2021 02:12:27 GMT
We always have time for everything, poker is a game that you can play at any time you want, without being preoccupied with playing on a specific day, and I think this doctor knew how to set her time to play poker well, despite her work Hard nurse, poker will always give you more than anything else, you have to dedicate time and the results will come by themselves.
 CALICUL02/01/2021 11:31:29 GMT
It takes more time to play and here i am referring to these women, because the profession of lawyer is very demanding, even in Canada. Sherwood Park in Alberta has a population of over 70.000, but there are also tourists, who sometimes they have different problems. Anyway she's a good player.
 geseco1203/01/2021 03:14:00 GMT
Some always want to do several things at the same time, they want to have several inputs, and that is good, this doctor is an example, that nobody can put obstacles when you want to achieve objectives, you always have to sacrifice, of course, always with study, Time and perseverance, things will be achieved, and in poker it works like this, congratulations, and the big prizes continue.

For sure this is a great story to be heard. It,s always a pleasure to see, how people can win big from nothing. For sure it,s really good to begin from moneyplay and later to be able to take a top place in a good tournament. But i,m sure that she is a good player and worked to win there. Everyone can win, but you need to be able to work a lot on your game, watch different videos and read different books. It,s a little bit strange to heard, that most of the money will goes for bills. The country that she are living have such a big taxes or what? Anyway this is a good win.
 antonis32103/01/2021 08:32:45 GMT
If she continues winning so much money , well she can go pro and stop working as a doc , which is a so demanding job , especially for a girl/woman or a mother , but if she could stay home or go live (when things with this virus improve ) and play some poker , and win ig some thousands , well that's some good money . I wish her the best . to do whatever pleases her the most , that's the most important thing in life . good luck for her life .
 Rogerio1003/01/2021 11:23:40 GMT
Nice story amazing how people can suprise you, would never say all that about here just on first look. It's sure hard to be sucesfull on two fields such as a doctor and a poker player. Maybe all hard work from her job helps her to be sucesfull too. Would be nice too to have a wife who give me a 100 bucks every time she win over 1k Big Smile .
 CALICUL03/01/2021 12:45:41 GMT
Smart people are all over the planet, but not everyone will get to taste celebrity or success. Most of them because they don't have courage. The lawyers still have something and that's why this woman tried this new option which is called poker, but with succes for her.
 sirkosun03/01/2021 19:18:58 GMT
This is wonderful and warm news. After reading such news, I want to return to playing poker.
When you see that a simple person makes a great game and you think that I can too.
Thank you Bankrollmob for this news.
 geseco1204/01/2021 03:18:39 GMT
I have always heard these types of stories, people who have responsibilities in other areas and always spend time playing poker, and end up leaving everything for poker, because they know that there is more input into it, although sometimes this does not happen immediately, it takes time to achieve it. you just have to be persistent.
 CALICUL04/01/2021 12:39:35 GMT
Now it remains to be seen whether the woman lawyer will continue to perform remarkably well with poker games or tournaments. There have been cases in the past where smart people have won, but after that remained anonymous because they no longer performed.
 antonis32105/01/2021 07:40:45 GMT
Well , the fact that she is a doctor made me think about some things . I used to think in the past that all these people who are so respectable cause they chose to study a lot , to be educated a lot , to work a lot , to serve the people nd be paid for these , and on the other side there the players , poker player , casino players , more or less pros , who win a tone of money , just for playing games , then enjoying the service of these educated people with this money or the ''fruits'' and creations of the modern world .

But Ofcourse this is a very wrong thought , there aren't red lines in the modern world , some might have gone to college then dedicate to poker and not practice their education study , some might have started working as a doctor , as this lady , or a lawyer , or another vey high appreciated job , but still they find time to play poker live , in big tournaments , or online , maybe during weekend , 7 hours if the tourney is big and if he's ITM it worths the time invested . Very strange that I used to think this thing , cause my aunt , doctor , loved to buy lottery tickets all the time for the dream to hit the big first prize (didn't know either of them poker or casino) and ofcourse my father , also a doctor , loved extremelly to play lotto and buy sometimes lotterytickets , also play betting (although he was copy pasting the betting consults from the papers , didn't knpow much about the teams , this advice is sh**) but he neither knew anything about poker and casino , he won very rarely , I guess the apple falls ight down the apple tree , this very rarely won is in my genes , lol . Big Smile Cool
 CALICUL09/01/2021 22:55:44 GMT
Smart people who know math don't have to learn poker strategy and skills for long time. Here i am talking about men but obviously also women. I think it is not difficult for those with higher education. Time to have and want to play.
 CALICUL29/08/2021 17:50:06 GMT

this doctor has allowed himself to waste his time and to play but it is not to be regretted, as long she earns money with poker. He is a good player and maybe will do many good things in future. Compared to her, i personally don't know if i could win big in the online or live environment.
 CALICUL15/10/2021 12:58:38 GMT
doctors see things differently than more normal people, because they have learned a lot and their ability to think is very high. You can't compare a kid with someone who have many years old and is mature. It is true that people who know math can practice this game very good, but the result of this woman is normal. Poker must also have good doctors.
