On Thursday, June 27, Daniel Negreanu has managed to end a decade-long drought at the 2024 World Series of Poker when he defeated Bryce Yockey heads up to win his 7th bracelet.

2024 WSOP Event #58: $50,000 Poker Players Championship

  • Date: June 23 to 27, 2024
  • Buy-in: $50,000
  • Entries: 89
  • Prize pool: $4,249,750

Daniel Negreanu outlasted a player field of 89 to take home the top prize money worth $1,178,703.

For almost 15 years, nobody has been hit more at the WSOP than Daniel Negreanu. The Canadian became an instant star right at the start of the poker boom, as his engaging table demeanor and ability to seemingly know what his opponents were holding all the time made him the face of the game for many fans. And there were lots of winning: four bracelets and a WSOP Player of the Year Award while he could still be called "Kid Poker."

But then the winning somehow eluded him, and it has been over a decade since Negreanu won a bracelet. There were several close misses, with five runner-up finishes since 2014, including the $1 Million Big One For One Drop.

Channeling his favorite quote from movie character Rocky Balboa "It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward", he kept getting back up and was finally rewarded, breaking a 10-year drought and earning the 7th WSOP bracelet of his poker career.

Final Table Action

Winners's Reaction

Negreanu said after winning his 7th bracelet:
"A lot of relief really. I have a lot of anxiety about coming heads-up because I've had so many seconds. And it was just nice for things to feel like they went my way at this final table."

Ever since it was first introduced to the WSOP calendar back in 2006, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship has been regarded by poker pros as the ultimate test of skill and endurance. Negreanu had played the first event and has come back every year since. It has actually become his favorite event, and the fact that his bracelet drought came to an end here, with Negreanu back atop the poker world, was all the more meaningful.

Negreanu said: "There is one event in the world I want to play more than any and I wanted to win more than any, and it's this one. This is the one. Obviously, the Main Event is special in a different way. But this one is all the best players in the world, pro-heavy field, playing 100-minute levels, days and days of grind, 12 hours a day. So to come out on top, you can't fluke that."

Even though in 10 years a new generation of pros caught up to him and the bracelet tally, Negreanu's popularity never waned. Thousands of people tune in every day to watch his WSOP vlogs on YouTube. When he won, a big crowd gathered around the rail and chanted "Daniel, Daniel".

He's constantly flocked by fans in the hallways of Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas for photos and autographs. He usually does it happily, fully embracing his role as a poker ambassador.

"I always sort of just fell into it. It's something I've always felt I could do, I was a natural for. Being on camera doesn't bother me one bit and I thought it would be fun to give people the chance to sort of sweat along with me. So that's why I do what I do. It's just fun."

After years of chronicling all his near-misses and tragic outcomes, Negreanu can finally show himself on top. Check out his videos on the event:

Ahahaha, what a heart breaking words!

There are some events with very high buy in , 20k , 50k or more . High rollers , high buy in games for the elite of poker pros or the whales with the big money , big ego but not so much of skill . In a field of 50 -100 players , odds to get a bracelet are higher than if you compete against 500 or 1.000 or many thousands of poker players .

Having said that , I expect Daniel to win more in the next year . If he wants to win more than ten bracelets , become maybe one of the top 3 in the bracelets' leaderboard . It seems that winning a bracelet is sth that interests him a lot . Soo.....

He's definitely up there as one of the all time greats, and there's no reason he can't go on to win more bracelets, don't think he'll ever be regarded as the GOAT,but a great ambassador for poker. Worship

No matter how many of them he have, 0 or 10, he is still great poker player!
 antonis32110/07/2024 16:50:31 GMT
He struggles to get a first place , until now at least . The history shows that heads up he has many problems to win , either in friendly contests or in real tournaments . Lets see if he has improved his gameplay and some more wins will come next years , or if this is simply a lucky win , and next such lucky win again in 15 years )))

Its hard to compare this tournament with 89 players and some bigger!

He is a winning poker player, he has proven it for several years, but poker sometimes surprises you, now Daniel has won his 7th bracelet, enjoy and continue playing, I always see him on his networks, he is always hungry for glory.

great!

Not all 90 players are pros . Many are whales who have the money and the will to play high stakes against pros . So imo it's better field to win a bracelet . And Helmuth chooses carefully what games he is going to play , and on which blind level and stage . This strategy , alongside any help from sponsors , gave him the first place in the bracelet leaderboard . He is not the best , he doesn't have gto best strategy like others , but still he wins . He is one of the best but not the best , at least nowadays

The same applies for Daniel negreanu . He used to be one of the best , now the game is solved , new generation has taken the game in another level , he struggles more to win a tourney or a bracelet in comparison to the past .

nobody said that all of this players are pro's!
 geseco1212/07/2024 04:17:35 GMT
After years of recording all his failures and tragic results, Negreanu can finally show that he is at the top, it is something that can happen to all of us, sometimes it doesn't go as planned, but it is nice to enjoy this great player again.
 dule-vu12/07/2024 05:57:41 GMT
dont know how this can happen to you when for you its too expensive to spend even 20 $ on buy in for some tournament!
 geseco1213/07/2024 23:48:15 GMT
Daniel Negreanu is a great player, he is always playing the most expensive tournaments, I always see him on his YouTube channel, he documents his entire life playing poker, I like his reactions at the tables, I love seeing this player be very transparent when plays poker.
