Six Sigma and TQM efforts can increase quality and incremental innovation. But focusing on tiny improvements in old systems can detract from the big picture. Also many qualify initiatives are all talk and no action. Harvard studies of the paint and photography industries show that a focus on remorseless improvement is linked to less radical innovation. Studies of TQM implementations show that companies talk about it but often actually do very little.

Members of Congress are set to square off over a push to create military chaplains for people who do not believe in God.

The effort to create a chaplain for atheists and "humanists" has been building over the last several weeks. While the title might sound inherently contradictory, supporters say the point is to give atheists in the military someone who will pro-actively reach out to them and facilitate meetings.

Hey! I'm glad you remember me!

I got a new job that took a whole lot of my time. For a while I was even flying to Estonia every week, in like a plane with propellers (!). First time for me, that was quite interesting. However, I'm finished with that now, so I will hopefully be hanging around a little more in the future.

I have hardly had time to play poker, tried it a few times the last weeks, but boy I'm rusty. Or maybe the opposition has become so much better. Only way to get an EV+ is if I get free tickets to 1.2 $ Sit'n'Goes... Tongue

As I wrote, I will hang around a bit more in the future, (Can't do it much less, I guess.) and hope I will see at least some of the oldtimers again. But I don't know what will happen to my pokerplaying. Gotta find a game where I still have an egde...

Jess is still here, I noticed in another thread. That's great! Smile

The best organizations have the best talent; Financial incentives drive company performance; Firms must change or die. Popular axioms like these drive companies’ everyday actions. Yet too many business adages are built on flimsy information, “miracle cure” hype, and flawed thinking about “best practices.” When leaders make choices based on dubious knowledge, they put their organizations at risk.

The problem with welfare is that it provides an incentive not to work. As soon as you get a job even if it's just part-time, you lose all welfare benefits. For many people, especially single parents, they would be getting less money overall, putting their own and their children's livelihoods (and homes) at risk.

This is why some people advocate replacing all welfare programs with a negative income tax. The problem with that is that it would encourage companies to pay even lower wages.

Here's "scientific" myths that we believe in:
- Children do not become hyperactive from sugar. This is confirmed by the number of tests in which the children were given drinks with or without sugar.
- Ostriches do not stick their head in the sand at all. When in danger, waving wings or play dead.- You will hardly find out anything if you blow your nose and look at the color of the mucus on the tissue.
- Appearance discharge varies from clear and fluid lines, the yellow-green with an array of various diseases. So the diagnosis on the basis that you can not determine.
- Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death. What actually happens is equally interesting - the skin is reduced.

The talk that’s circulating that the U.S. Treasury can circumvent the debt ceiling by minting a one trillion dollar platinum coin is pure nonsense.

First, to the best of my knowledge, the U.S. Treasury does not own any platinum. That means it would have to go into the market and buy up platinum to mint such a coin.

But the Treasury is broke, so where would the money come from to buy the platinum?

The Federal Reserve, presumably. But I doubt the Fed is going to print another trillion dollars in one fell swoop to let the Treasury go buy 625.78 million ounces of platinum.

More and more owners protect the name of the yacht.
It's the same for Roxana, Dolce Far Niente, Nanseabee, Crystal Sea, La Dolce Vita, Anson Bell, etc..."

This is silly. We have the absolute right to call our boats what we want. I hereby declare my boat name is heretofore: 'Dolce Far Niente'. Please sue me. No copyright, trademark, or patent law is available for protection of such names. I am a professional in this field, I am sure you cannot protect boat names in nearly every country.

One can always include in a contract for sale, a clause which says one must change the name upon purchase, however, that is very limited and only obligates the buyer. Anyone else got a different opinion on this topic?
I'd like to hear of it.

Yeah, now that I have more time I've been trying it again. Sometimes drunk on weekends, and loose (but that's expected, it's for the entertainment), but also sober a few times, and I don't know... Either everybody has gotten so much better, or (almost) all the retards are broke, or I have lost it.

I used to do a small but steady profit, but not anymore. I seem to be an even steven nowdays, getting chopped up by the rake in the end.

It's pretty much easy play-through bonuses that keeps me floating, and free tickets. Maybe I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, and that shows in my playing.

How about you? I remember you used to do quite well at PKR? How come you stopped playing? Weren't you like semi-pro? Or do I remember it wrong?

As a matter of fact, I did get a free ticket from PKR the other week, logged in and played, and noticed that my only friend there (you) was logged in. So if it was not a bug in the software you must have been there lately?

The Obama Administration has threatened to veto the 2014 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, saying it is too generous with military pay and too stingy with civilian pay.

As a point of clarification, the Defense Appropriations Act is a distinct entity from the Defense Authorization Act (or NDAA), which has been the point of focus for the past few months. The Authorization Act describes how the US DoD is “authorized” to organize and operate; the Appropriations Act “appropriates” the money to accomplish that end.

The appropriations bills were actually already passed by each house of Congress, but have yet to come out of conference committee.
