The 54th World Series of Poker officially started on Tuesday, May 30 with the $500 Casino Employees NLHE event that is open only for individuals who work in the gambling industry.
The "shuffle up and deal" announcement was delivered by Jack Effel, WSOP Vice President and Tournament Director, who asked for a moment of silence in the room for the recently departed poker legend Doyle Brunson.
Doyle Brunson, aka Texas Dolly, was a 10-time WSOP bracelet champion who actually attended the first-ever summer series way back in 1970. He died earlier this month at 89 years old.
Effel said:
"As we get another WSOP underway, we're reminded how indebted we are to the colossal impact Doyle had on the WSOP and the game of poker itself.
Doyle was the sport's biggest ambassador who helped bring poker to the mainstream. He is a legend that we had the honor to work alongside for more than 50 years. We owe so much to Doyle and look forward to setting records this summer as a special tribute to his legacy."
A tribute video to Brunson was then aired for the players to watch:
As Brunson was laid to rest in a private funeral ceremony in late May, his son and fellow Poker Hall of Famer Todd Brunson said on Twitter that "there will be a celebration of life during the WSOP that all will be welcome to."
This is the second year that the WSOP will take place on the Las Vegas Strip, with events being split between venues the Paris Casino and the newly-rebranded Horseshoe Casino.
Organizers of the tournament hope that with the biggest capacity ever of 608 tables spread across over 200,000 square feet of convention space, this will be the biggest in the history of the series in terms of attendance, with 20 online and 95 live events scheduled from May 30 up to July 18, 2023.
This is necessary for every star in any field. A last respect is very necessary because is human and whoever has time can go to his grave. I suppose that in America many people will do it.
its good to honor him that way ,. he deserves this honor . for sure he will be remembered , he is the godfather of poker after all , his contribution to the poker game is sth that it is accepted and recognized by everyone . he is one of the very few guys' who was loved by far too many , i do not believe he had many enemies , at least at the poker world
In this way we respect what he did and we will remember for a long time what he was in this great sport like poker, a great teaching in all senses left us this great player.

It is not easy for a community of so many years to see a man play at a high level and overnight receive this news, we will always remember what he did, for sure we will always remember what he did, for sure we will always remember what he did, for sure we will always remember what he did.
A nice gesture from the entire poker room and the poker community to remain silent before the tournament started, a token of appreciation for what this player did and has done for many years in poker.
these things must be done because every high-value player must be respected, but also the smaller professional players. Death is inevitable and moments of silence must be taken.
That's right, death can surprise us at any time, the most important thing is to be able to do good in this world, this player has set a great example as a poker player, his career is very clean, a player to be imitated by all.
jajajajaj, mentioning him does not mean that we do not leave him in peace, we will always remember him and his name will be present in all of us, and because he is a great example of a player we will always be mentioning him.
It is a great loss, those of us who love this sport will feel it much more, we are a poker family, and we feel when someone leaves us, a great man who left us a great example, a great teaching that you can achieve your goals with hard work.
It's a touching tribute to a poker legend. Doyle Brunson's impact on the poker world is undeniable, and starting the WSOP with a moment of silence honors his legacy.
Amazing player. For me, when I was a beginner when it comes to playing poker, one of my main idols. He won two Wsops in the past with a hand of 10-2 at the end, which made poker history. I am very sorry that he left us. Recently, more and more people are dying, especially young ones, because at least he lived to a ripe old age and won and experienced a lot in his life.
dule-vu writes about something I watched a long time ago. I often watch old poker tournaments like Ept or Wsop. The most interesting moments in these tournaments or final tables. The Wsop organizers did a good job of preventing the death of such a distinguished player in the world of poker as Doyl Brunson at the beginning of the tournament.
yes, he was a beautiful age, he was a great player and deserves all the respect. What can be said about him, other than a few words about his life in the world of poker and that's all because his personal life does not concern us.
