Analysts expect that the GGR in Macau casinos would be badly affected, after a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 was recorded last week.
Authorities have introduced "a state of immediate prevention", but it has fallen short of temporary closure of the casinos. According to GGR Asia, a total of 31 confirmed cases were noted last week, and the numbers are expected to continue to rise this week.
The six casino operators in Macau are once again bracing themselves for the possibility of several weeks of close-to-zero income.
Update:
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Macau went up to 36 by the time a Monday afternoon briefing was held, in the city's first outbreak since October.
As of 3:30pm on Monday, Macau had eight "red" lockdown zones (indicating either the residence or workplace of confirmed cases) and five "yellow" zones (this means precautionary measures were needed).
This signifies that the estimate on Macau casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) for June would be reduced to just 9% of that for the pre-pandemic trading period of June 2019. It would mean an average daily rate of GGR for June would be down 31% from what was achieved in May this year.
