Instead of the ordinary Weekly Rant, Daniel Negreanu posted a short video on youtube called Checking in from WSOP this time (July 16th). In the video, Daniel talks about, for example, how unlucky he has been so far at the 43rd Annual World Series of Poker.
Jonathan Duhamel, 23, from Boucherville, Quebec became the first Canadian citizen in history to win a world championship. Two Canadians had previously finished in the runner-up spot in the 41-year-history of world championships. Tuan Lam second place in 2007, and Howard Goldfarb (Jerry Yang won) back in 1995 (Dan Harrington won). For the win Duhamel received the first place prize of $8,944,31 and his first WSOP bracelet. A big congratulations to the new world champion of poker!
Seven-year-old Alexa Fisher from Cibolo, Texas, finished first class in school this summer and got to chose where she wanted to go on holiday with her family. Now, you might think that she choose Disneyland or a similar place that kids her age usually dreams of going to, but that's not what Alexa wanted. Instead she choose to go to the 2010 WSOP in Las Vegas and watch the best poker players in the world and get their autographs.
Alexa is, as you already might have figured out, crazy about poker and according to many poker pros who've seen her play, she's a poker prodigy that probably will succeed in the future - when she's old enough to play for real money. Despite her young age, Alexa Fisher already knows how to play most of the major poker games, and she already knows how to deal and shuffle cards, bluff, raise, check and fold.
7,319 players signed up for the 2010 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas. Brandon Steven, car dealer and father of 5 from Wichita, Kansas, went out on 10th place after 8 days of poker. In other words, he was very, very close of making it to the final table and being guaranteed at least $810k with the chance of winning the first place prize of almost $9 million dollars and getting the world champion title.
Even though Brandon Steven didn't make it all the way to the final table, he still received $635k and should be quite happy with his results, or? Well, according to what he said in an interview with ESPN, it doesn't seem that way.
He's one of the richest and most successful poker players in the world, he masters all the major poker games, he's as good at playing tournaments as cash games - both live and online. Phil Ivey is the ultimate poker player and probably also the most famous one in the world right now.
So what are the downsides of being rich and famous in the poker world? Well, it doesn't seem to be a walk in the park at all times. At the 2010 WSOP for example, Phil Ivey had to hire a bodyguard because people didn't let him be alone for 1 single minute.
James Dempsey, 27, has won over $1 million dollars online and has also been very successful live. At the 2010 WSOP he won a $1,5k PLO event and ended up in second place in the $10k Omaha Hi/Lo event. In total he cashed in 4 events at the 2010 WSOP. Quite impressing if you ask me! It's clear that players like James Dempsey do not grow on trees, and Full Tilt probably realized the same thing when they signed him a few days ago.
James Dempsey played his first tournament as Red Pro in last Sunday's Poker Million at Full Tilt. However, he didn't do all that well this time, but he still has plenty of time to show the owners of Full Tilt that he deserves to be a Red Pro.
It was only about 2 days ago since the final event, the Main Event, at this year's WSOP came to an end. Well, there's still the final table to be played in September. Anyhow, after nearly 2 months of WSOP-action in Vegas, one would almost assume that the WSOP crew would take some time off, but instead of taking a break they are working day and night on this year's World Series of Poker Circuit Tour.
The first tournament on the WSOP Circuit Tour will be played on August 19, and in order to make sure that the tournament will grow even bigger this year the WSOP crew has lowered the buy-in in hope that even more players will take part. In total 8 events with the buy-in of $1,500 will be played on each stop. Of course there will also be a championship event as well, however, the buy-in for this tournament is a bit more expensive - $10,000.
The 2010 WSOP Main Event is finally down to the final table as there are only 9 players left. However, we will have to wait until November 6th for the televised final table. Even though the final table doesn't include so many notables as we maybe would have hoped for, I'm still sure that it will be a super exciting one. I will especially keep an eye on the only non-pro Cuong "Sol" Nguyen and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrach who we used to see in high stakes poker a few years ago. Anyhow, here are the 9 finalists and brief information about each one of them.
Event #49, No-Limit Hold'em $1,5000, has found its winner. Michael Linn (USA) took home the first prize of $609,493 after knocking out his final opponent Taylor Larkin (USA) in heads up. Michael was quite lucky with the cards on the final table. Of course the fact that his family and Barry Greenstein was there to support him must have helped a lot as well. A big congratulations to Michael Linn and his first ever WSOP bracelet.
Day 1 of Tournament of Champions is now in the books. 22 of 27 players (20 of them chosen by popular vote) have survived and made it to the second starting day. In the top of the field is Erik Seidel (72,075) closely followed by Johnny Chan (71,325) and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow (70,575). I must say that it was a quite entertaining first day of the tournament.
Many great plays, bluffs and lay downs is what we got to see in the first day of the tournament. But maybe this is what to expect when the poker world's elite are playing cards? I'm sure that day 2 of the tournament will be as interesting as the first one, and I hope that "The Mouth" will make it far in the tournament! Not because he's the best poker player, but because he's a great entertainer at the poker table! :)
507 players signed up for the $2,500 mixed hold'em (event 44) at the 2010 WSOP. After 3 long, but interesting, days of poker there were only 9 players left and time for the final table to be played. Danny Hannawa started the final table as the chip leader with Gavin Smith not far behind. Gavin quickly overtook the chip lead and then knocked out Danny in heads-up. For the win he got his very first WSOP bracelet and the first place prize of $268,238.
Gavin Smith, 41, has won over $5 million dollars during his 16 year poker career, including 4 WPT final tables and a win at 2005 Mirage Poker Showdown. In the past few years, Gavin has been very anonymous when it comes to WSOP results - until now. After reading an interview with him after his long-awaited win, one quickly understands how hard he has been working on his game before the 2010 WSOP. I don't think Event 44 could have gotten a better (and happier) winner than Gavin Smith.
Tom "durrrr" Dwan is playing lots of events at the WSOP this year, mainly because he wants to win his first bracelet and the prop bet against Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu which will give him $2 million dollars! One would think that it must be tiring to play so many events, but it doesn't seem to be that way for durrrr since he has been finding energy and time to play online as well. How come someone with millions of dollars in the bank account still can be hungry for more and eager to play every single day, all year round? The answer is very simple, Tom Dwan loves the game and the kick he gets from playing against the world's best poker players. That's probably what makes him one of the best poker players in the world.
Event #35: $10,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em Championship attracted a strong 256-player field this time. Tom Dwan, Barry Greenstein, Howard Lederer and Daniel Negreanu were just a few of the notable players that took part. Big names that made it far in the tournament were Phil Gordon, Bertrand Grospellier, Sorel Mizzi. However, it wasn't any of them who took home the tournament. After 4 long days of thrilling heads up poker, Ayaz Mahmood (right) was the last man standing after that he had sent his final opponent Ernst Schmejkal (left) off the rail. For the win he received nothing less than $626,674.
Mahmood is a 38-year-old former furniture retailer-turned poker pro now living in the Houston suburb of Sugarland, TX. He is originally from Bangladesh. In fact, Mahmood became the first Bangladesh-born WSOP gold bracelet winner in the 41-year history of the WSOP.
Phil Ivey keeps on impressing with more fantastic results and achievements! Not many hours ago, he did it again as he took down the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E event! Phil made it to the final table alongside with some other big names in poker - John Juanda, Jeff Lisandro etc. Anyhow, Phil made it to heads-up against Bill Chen and it didn't take long before he sent him off the rail as well and grabbed his 8th bracelet! It's almost a bit sick (and unreal) that a poker player can be so extremely successful both online and live. And we shouldn't forget that Phil has made some serious cash from prop bets as well. Phil Ivey is, if you ask me, a complete gambler that deserves to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame within the next few years!
Even though the majority of notables in the poker world can be found in Las Vegas at the moment (or getting ready to go there), there are still a few that play in other tournaments around the globe. William Thorson, 27, the Swedish PokerStars Pro, is one of them. It turned out to be a wise decision of Thorson to go and play PokerStars Baltic Festival in Tallinn, instead of playing some event in 2010 WSOP.
Thorson survived a field of 222 players and won over the Lithuanian poker pro Dominykas Karmazinas after 3 hours of heads-up. This is the first major No Limit Hold'em title for William Thorson. He has been very successful in different Omaha tournaments and also reached 4 final tables in the EPT, but he has never won a single major NLH tournament before.
27 players are now ready for the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions. 20 (9 of them World Champs) of these players were voted by the people and over 350,000 ballots were submitted. Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey were the ones who had received the most votes. Phil received the most votes, however, he and Daniel were only separated by less than 30 votes.
The Tournament Of Champions will start on June 27. The final table will be played on July 4 and it will be televised on ESPN. A really interesting and thrilling final table is to expect!
Peter "Zupp" Jepsen is the poker pro who had everything, sponsorship contract, a beautiful girl friend who loved him, money, investments etc. However, last year, everything took a big turn in his life and he didn't cash in single tournament and the investments didn't pay off at all.
Part from the fact that he was running out of money, he got the swine flue, broke his foot, got chronic inflammation. On top of the money and health issues, his girl friend left him. Life was and is still not easy for Peter "Zupp" Jepsen. However, he's planning on a comeback at 2010 WSOP. He will play cash games and in a few of the events. But, if he doesn't do well - his poker career is probably over, according to himself.
Even though 2-7 Draw Lowball might not be the most common and popular poker game today, it still attracted 101 players who were willing to pay $10,000 and enter Event 19 at 2010 WSOP. Among these 101 players were lots to notables - John Juanda, Erik Sagström, Christer Björin, Erik Seidel, Daniel Negreanu etc.
Anyhow, 101 players became 72 players after the first day, and 72 players became 21 players after the second day. Among the remaining players we find huge names such as Daniel Negreanu (picture), Barry Greenstein, Erik Seidel, John Juanda etc. It will be a very interesting closure of the tournament with so many notables involved.
Carter Phillips had his breakthrough last year when he became the EPT Barcelona, but since then we haven't heard much from him. He has been playing in quite a few tournaments but not won any bigger amounts worth mentioning. However, tonight the long-awaited payday finally came for the 21-year-old American as he took down the $1,500 buy-in six-handed no-limit Hold'em tournament (event 16) at 2010 WSOP.
A big congratulations to Steve Gee who took home event 13 early this morning. Gee survived a massive field of 3042 players and grabbed the first prize of almost half a million dollars and his very first WSOP Bracelet. This was the second $1,000 buy-in No Limit Holdem event held at this year's WSOP. However, there are plenty of events with $1,000 buy-in to go (like this one - Event 13), so we will probably see even larger fields of players in the upcoming events.
Final table results:
1. Steve Gee - $472,479 (USA) 2. Matthew Vance - $292,232 (USA) 3. David Baker - $206,813 (USA) 4. Nicholas Heather - $149,702 (Ireland) 5. Jeffrey Gross - $109,621 (USA) 6. Daniel Thomas - $81,203 (USA) 7. Kyung Han - $60,833 (USA) 8. Jared Hamaby - $46,077 (USA) 9. Mats Gavatin $35,290 (Sweden)
The $1,000 No Limit Holdem event (Event 13) of 2010 WSOP attracted a huge field this time. Not less than 3042 players signed up for the tournament and created a huge prize pool - for being such a cheap event to enter. Anyhow, after a few days of poker, we have finally reached the final table. These are the 9 players who are going to battle for the first prize of $472,479.
1. David Baker, 2 553 000 2. Matthew Vance, 1 731 000 3. Steven Gee, 1 540 000 4. Nicholas Heather, 993 000 5. Kyung Han, 613 000 6. Daniel Thomas, 423 000 7. Jared Hamby, 423 000 8. Mats Gavatin, 393 000 9. Jeffrey Gross, 281 00
The payout structure is quite steep, so we can probably expect the final table to go on for long time. Good luck to the remaining 9 players!
To win a WSOP bracelet is for many the greatest achievement that can be reached in an entire poker career. Of course there are a few who think that a WSOP bracelet is piece of junk when others have so many bracelets that they even decide to sell 1 of them (I'm referring to Patrik Antonius and T.J. Cloutier).
Anyhow, someone who's really longing for his very first bracelet this year is Tom "durrrr" Dwan. Dwan has been extremely successful online in the past few years and he has won over $50 million dollars throughout his career.
Have you ever wondered about different ways of getting banned from a casino or poker tournament? You could start arguing with the staff or steal a sandwich. It will for sure work, just ask Luke Schwartz if you don't believe me. So, what does it take to get banned for life from the World Series of Poker? This is a story about a man who got banned for life the other day, according to Michael Craig's (poker pro) blog.
"How do you get banned for life from the World Series of Poker? According to Tournament Director Jack Effel, "You don't take someone else's chips." This is apparently what happened to the player who escorted from the Amazon Room during the third level of play in the $1,000 NLHE on Saturday afternoon."
There are only 10 players left in the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship and we are probably only a few moments away from the final table. Next player to leave the tournament gets $152,739 and the remaining players will fight for the really big money. In the lead is Robert Mizrachi with 3,125,000, closely followed by David Baker with 3,095,000.
Ladies and gentlemen, there is going to be an amazing final table (no matter who's going out next) in WSOP's most expensive tournament. Most remarkable about the remaining field of players has to be that both the brothers Robert and Michael Mizrachi are still in the tournament.
A big congratulations to the 9 players below who have qualified for our WSOP Final Freeroll. They now have the chance to win a WSOP Package worth $14,000 and lots of other cool prizes in the final on the 6th of June. Good luck!

The final table included 4 poker dealers, 1 dealer for other casino games, 2 floor staff, 1 bartender and 1 office worker. Ladies and gentlemen, we only have to wait another 2 days before the 2010 World Series of Poker kicks off at Rio in Las Vegas. We have 57 action filled events ahead of us, and hopefully there will be lots of interesting side events and cash games going on as well. We should't forget though, World Series of Poker isn't just the biggest and most popular poker tournament that is played for 2 months every year, but also that it's a poker tour as well.

Doyle Brunson has been gambling heavily for almost 60 years straight now. In the past few years however, he has cut down on the gambling and traveling and instead tried to take it easy and spend more time with his family. However, it seems like cutting down on the gambling part hasn't done him any good. According to Eli Elezra, one of Doyle's closest friends, Doyle has a hard time to appreciate life when he's not gambling. This is something Doyle also confirms in his blog.
"Damn! Just when I was feeling good and had decided to make a full blown run trying to win a bracelet at the WSOP, all of a sudden I feel lethargic with no energy whatsoever. Hopefully it's what I call the "Brunson Blues". When I don't have something to gamble on, I start feeling bad. It's hard to call yourself a degenerate gambler but I guess that's what I am. I've had 57 years of almost non stop gambling and I need that adrenaline rush."
When Mike Matusow hits the "headlines" lately it's never about him winning a poker tournament or lots of cash, instead it's usually about about crazy prop bets and similar things. In a recent episode of the TV show "Poker2Nite", Mike Matusow spoke his mind regarding women's success in poker.
It seemed like he wasn't all that happy with how well women have been doing so far this year. However, Mike is sure of one thing - they wont do as well in 2010 WSOP. He's so sure of their failure that he promised to run naked down the strip in Las Vegas if they win at least 3 bracelets.
