Rain delays usually lend themselves to plenty of goofiness and merriment -- stranding 50 or so young men in the same place with nothing better to do with their time will generally produce at least a few shenanigans. There are the tried-and-true timekillers, like the ol' reliable slip-and-slide, and there are plenty of, uh, more newfangled traditions. But these are mere trivialities, never rising above the level of pleasant distraction. During a rain delay in their game on Friday, though, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and UL-Monroe baseball teams strived for something more -- immortality, or at least a news cycle or two. Carpe diem, boys, may you rain delay like a champion today.

MIAMI -- The way Giancarlo Stanton is swinging the bat, the slugger appears to be playing his own game of, "Can I top this?" A day after knocking the ball into the camera well, Stanton went even farther to center field. Stanton's mammoth blast went over the back wall (or batters' eye) with a drive that was caught barehanded by a fan in the corner of the second deck. The drive, according to Statcast™, was tracked at 478 feet and had an exit velocity of 115 mph.

For the second time this month, they had worked together to fashion a shutout. But the long-lasting memories of this gem will focus on the fact that Miller was one out shy of recording his first no-hitter before Marlins first baseman Justin Bour laced a first-pitch, 95-mph fastball up the middle for a two-out single in the ninth.

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez has hit a lot of home runs in his life -- 111 of them in the Majors, 46 in the Minors, 49 at Vanderbilt University and countless others before then. But Tuesday night was a first for Alvarez and a rare occurrence at PNC Park. Alvarez launched a home run all the way out of the ballpark during the Pirates' 8-5 loss to the Twins, ripping a solo shot that landed in a boat moored in the Allegheny River.
