Heston gets rematch vs. no-hitter foe Mets

If the Mets can trace their current offensive funk back to any one day in particular, it may as well be June 9 -- the day that Giants rookie Chris Heston no-hit them at Citi Field. Since that night, the Mets have struggled to score with any consistency, while Heston has blossomed into a key member of San Francisco's rotation.
Now comes the rematch, a chance for revenge. Heston will face Jon Niese and the Mets in Monday's series opener at AT&T Park, with both teams struggling to keep pace in the National League's developing Wild Card race.

Kluber tops Astros for first win since May

CLEVELAND -- Indians right-hander Corey Kluber continued to receive little in the way of run support, but he took matters into his own hands by shutting out the Astros over 6 2/3 innings in a 2-0 victory at Progressive Field on Tuesday evening.
Kluber struck out seven and walked two, scattering five hits. He entered the game receiving just 2.33 runs of support per start, worst in baseball, and the number only dropped. Kluber rectified that by holding his opposition scoreless for the second time this season to pick up his first win since May 28.

Cubs pounce on close play, Cards error in nightcap

CHICAGO -- Behind three runs in a wild seventh inning, the Cubs rallied to beat the Cardinals, 5-3, in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Tuesday night. Chicago won Game 1, 7-4, for its first doubleheader sweep at Wrigley Field since Sept. 27, 2003, against Pittsburgh.
"With us, it's really rewarding to watch our guys battle through the whole thing; it's entirely a team effort," said Cubs manager Joe Maddon. "All those little things pile up."

Phenoms, Prince, Pujols highlight HR Derby field

A newly formatted Gillette Home Run Derby presented by Head & Shoulders will feature a couple of legendary sluggers and a pair of the best power-hitting rookies to come along in quite some time.
The field was set Wednesday for the 2015 Derby, which will be held Monday at 8 p.m. ET at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. It features two National League Rookie of the Year Award candidates (Joc Pederson and Kris Bryant), a past Derby winner (two-time victor Prince Fielder), a hometown slugger (Todd Frazier), a future Hall of Famer (Albert Pujols), power-hitting third basemen (Manny Machado and Josh Donaldson) and a first-timer with plenty of clout (Anthony Rizzo).

Cards sink Bucs behind Martinez, big inning

PITTSBURGH -- Two-run singles by Matt Carpenter and Yadier Molina comprised a scoreless tiebreaking fifth-inning rally Thursday night as the Cardinals downed the Pirates, 4-1, landing the first punch of an early National League Central showdown between the NL's top two teams.
Between dodging a pair of early two-on, none-out jams, Esurance All-Star Game Final Vote nominee Carlos Martinez was brilliant in raising St. Louis' division lead to 5 1/2 games over the Bucs, whose winning streak ended at five games. He went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, walking two, striking out eight and hitting 100 mph on his 97th pitch, in the seventh inning.

Greinke extends scoreless innings to 35 2/3
Dodgers starter makes strong case to start All-Star Game

LOS ANGELES -- One night after Clayton Kershaw auditioned for the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Vote, Zack Greinke sent in his application to start the All-Star Game presented by T-Mobile for the National League with another dominating performance.
Greinke tossed eight innings, allowing just one hit, and didn't allow a run for the fifth straight start in a 6-0 win over the Phillies at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night. He extended his scoreless streak to 35 2/3 innings, which is the longest active streak in the Majors.
