After being hit in the left hand by a batted ball by teammate Xander Bogaerts and making an early exit in Wednesday's game, a hand bruise has sidelined the Red Sox outfielder for the past three games, forcing him to head back to Boston to get an MRI on the injury.

Meet the Matz: Historic debut for Mets lefty Four RBIs is most by pitcher, Mets rookie in MLB debut By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- For hours, Steven Matz made Citi Field's clubhouse his home, arriving early Sunday morning with plenty of time to marvel at the "comfortable couches." Welcome to the big leagues; the idle hours are not so bad. It was not until he stepped to the mound in the late afternoon that jitters truly enveloped Matz, who fired his first 96-mph fastball to the brick behind home plate. Then, just like that, Matz transformed into a force as dominant at the plate as he was on the mound. The rookie from Long Island cracked a two-run double in his first big league plate appearance Sunday, en route to a three-hit, four-RBI day in the Mets' 7-2 win over the Reds.

Gray recovering from bout of gastroenteritis
OAKLAND -- Sonny Gray has a severe case of bacterial gastroenteritis, and will likely be released from the hospital Wednesday night or Thursday morning barring any setbacks. Though the sickness is contagious, no other members of the A's or Gray's family have taken ill. A's manager Bob Melvin said Chris Bassitt will pitch Sunday against the Mariners if Gray does not. "He's getting much better, no fever," A's team physician Allan Pont said. "He's rounding into shape."
