The National Hockey League said Friday's game between the host Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks has been postponed due to a severe snowstorm threatening to bring record accumulations to the US capital.
A makeup date for the game will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed, the NHL said in a statement. The storm, expected to end late on Saturday afternoon, could leave 2 to 2.5 feet (61 to 76 cm) on the ground and bring winds of 30 to 50 mph (48 to 80 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

The New Jersey recalled forward Sergey Kalinin from Albany and assigned forwards Joseph Blandisi and Reid Boucher and defensemen Marc-Andre Gragnani and Seth Helgeson to the American Hockey League team. Kalinin was relegated to Albany on Friday in order for the Devils to make an emergency recall of Gragnani.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews pulled out of the NHL All-Star game in Nashville this weekend due to illness.
Nashville Predators left winger James Neal was named to replace Toews. NHL rules require a player named to the game who chooses not to participate to also miss the game before or after the All-Star Game. The Blackhawks announced Toews won't play on Feb. 2 against Colorado. - -

Calgary Flames defenceman Dennis Wideman apologized for cross-checking a linesman during a game Wednesday night against the Nashville Predators but was suspended for his actions a day later by the NHL. Wideman said he cross-checked linesman Don Henderson unintentionally in a woozy scramble to get back to the team's bench at 11:19 of the second period. Wideman flattened Henderson with a hard shot to the upper-middle back but was not penalized for the blindside move. - -
The Los Angeles Kings sent forward Kyle Clifford to the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League for a conditioning assignment, the team announced. Clifford has three points in 26 games with the Kings this season. He has missed the past 23 with an upper-body injury. - -
The Toronto Maple Leafs are loaning forward Josh Leivo to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, the club announced. Leivo, 22, played four games for the Maple Leafs this season. He has 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 35 games with the Marlies. - -
The Washington Capitals reassigned defenceman Ryan Stanton to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, the team announced. Stanton, 26, has four goals and 23 assists in 120 career NHL games with Washington, Vancouver and Chicago. He has seven points (two goals, five assists) in 30 games with Hershey this season.

Nashvil-St.Louis Blues 02:00 2,35 3,80 2,45

Blues team scope: St. Louis left wing Jaden Schwartz, who has missed 45 games with a fractured left ankle, began skating with teammates Jan. 20 but is unlikely to return to the lineup Tuesday; he will need to get in some full-time practices. Schwartz continued to work with the training staff in St. Louis during the All-Star break. "I want to get back as soon as I can," Schwartz said. "We decided that was best for me. With me hopefully coming back (sometime) after the break, it only makes sense. I've got to get back into shape." The Blues, who recalled goalie Pheonix Copley and forward Ty Rattie from Chicago of the American Hockey League, will conclude a four-game trip; they were 1-1-1 before the break, scoring three goals. The coaching staff worked during the break on putting together a lineup to try to jump-start the offense. "How we formulate our lines moving forward, it's going to give us a chance to take stock," coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Predators team scope: Nashville has won four in a row (all on the road) and is 5-1-0 the past six games after a five-game losing streak (0-4-1); it begins a four-game homestand. The Predators have thrust themselves back in the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference with their recent winning streak. Goalie Pekka Rinne is 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .963 save percentage the past three starts. The Predators have lost seven of the past nine against the Blues (2-5-2) at Bridgestone Arena. Nashville recalled forward Viktor Arvidsson from Milwaukee of the AHL in a move that is likely to correspond with Colin Wilson (lower body) being on injured reserve since Jan. 8.

Calgary-Carolina Hurric. 03:30 2,30 3,80 2,50

Hurricanes team scope: Defenseman Brett Pesce (lower body) was placed on injured reserve, and forward Phillip Di Giuseppe and defenseman Ryan Murphy were recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League. Carolina has earned 15 out of a possible 20 points in its past 10 games to climb to within three points of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who hold the second wild card spot from the Eastern Conference into the Stanley Cup Playoffs (the Penguins have played two fewer games). Carolina defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-0 last Tuesday. This is the first of a three-game trip that ends against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday and Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.

Flames team scope: Goalie Karri Ramo will start, and forward Michael Ferlund (upper body) will return. Ferlund, out since a collision with Columbus Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson on Jan. 21, skated on a line with Matt Stajan and David Jones. Forwards Joe Colborne (undisclosed) and Josh Jooris (undisclosed) also are healthy after missing the final game before the All-Star break (a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Wednesday). Colborne skated on a line with Lance Bouma and Markus Granlund. Jooris was an extra with forward Brandon Bollig. Forward Mason Raymond, placed on waivers Tuesday, and defenseman Dennis Wideman, who had a disciplinary hearing with the NHL, were not at practice. The Flames have lost three in a row and five of their past six games. "We need to basically win two out of every three games," coach Bob Hartley told the Flames website. "We're in that situation. We didn't collect points at the right time against the right opponents in the first part of the season. Now it's the final stretch. We don't have a choice. If we want to be a playoff team, we have to redeem ourselves."

Nashvil-Philadelphia Fly. 02:00 2,10 3,80 2,80

Flyers team scope: Goaltenders Steve Mason and rookie Anthony Stolarz were among 10 players who took part in an optional practice Wednesday, according to the Courier-Post. Mason is expected to start Thursday but Stolarz could play his first NHL game at some point this month with Michal Neuvirth out 7-10 days because of a lower-body injury. "I haven't been up here for any real practice time in the last year," Stolarz told the Flyers website. "I had a road trip [last season] but it was kind of just pregame skates. Having a couple days of practice to work with [goalie coach Kim Dillabaugh], I'm going to look to use that time and take advantage of it, and whatever happens, happens." Stolarz, a second-round pick (No. 45) in the 2012 NHL Draft, is 15-10-3 with a 2.45 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 29 games this season with Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League.

Predators team scope: Mike Ribeiro was at left wing on the top line at practice Wednesday, alongside center Ryan Johansen and right wing James Neal. Ribeiro, who has six goals and 30 points in 51 games, has bounced between center and the wing this season. That left a second line of Mike Fisher between Filip Forsberg and Craig Smith. Forward Colin Wilson practiced Wednesday but did not take part in regular line rushes. He last played Jan. 8 because of an upper-body injury. Also skating was Gabriel Bourque, who has been out since Nov. 27 because of an upper-body injury. He was at left wing on the third line, along with center Calle Jarnkrok. Cody Bass and Viktor Arvidsson split rushes at right wing on that line. The fourth line was Paul Gaustad, who celebrated his 34th birthday Wednesday, centering Miikka Salomaki and Austin Watson.
